Smart Food Culinary Championship
Smart Food Culinary Championship is a national competition for student chefs to create innovative millet recipes. As an effort to mainstream millets and create awareness among the culinary community, student chefs were encouraged to create recipes using the nine millets: sorghum, pearl millet (jowar), finger millet (Ragi), foxtail millet, barnyard millet, little millet, kodo millet, proso millet and browntop millet.
The first Smart Food Culinary Challenge was launched with 58 student chefs from different states across India. Top six teams were selected to compete before live audience on 19 January 2019 for the title – Smart Food Culinary Challenge Championship. This challenge was video documented as a first-ever reality show for a cause.
Boosting millets among the culinary community, the drama-documentary captures the journey of these student chefs in their attempts to bring innovative millet cuisines to the table. Described by the judges as crisp, light and fresh, the dishes prepared by these chefs will bring Smart Food into the circular of chefs and back to the tables across the country.
The skills of students of top culinary schools including the Institute of Hotel Management, Indian Institute of Hotel Management and Culinary Academy of India and the host institute, MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, were put to test in both traditional and continental cuisine.
From millet biryani to smoothie, the dishes were judged by an eminent panel comprising chefs Anahita Dhondy (SodaBottle Opener Wala), Ramaswamy Selvaraju (Vivanta by Taj) and Vinod K Batti (IKEA Food). Out of the seven finalist teams, one team was crowned Smart Food Culinary Champion.
