ILOILO City – The Department of Agriculture in Western Visayas pushes sorghum farming that will serve as an alternative source for livestock and poultry feeds.
Remelyn Recoter, DA regional executive director, spearheaded a ceremonial harvest of sorghum at Research Outreach Station (ROS) in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo on May 15.
The ROS has established 1,700 square meter demo farm to determine the suitability of the crop for production.
The demo farm will also serves as learning site for farmers who are interested in the production of sorghum.
Aside from Iloilo ROS, other DA research stations across the region have also put up varietal suitability trials.
Sorghum is a versatile crop that can be grown as a grain, forage or sweet crop.
It is not widely known in the Philippines and it is the world’s fifth largest grain crop, next to rice, corn, wheat, and barley. (With a report from Department of Agriculture Region 6/PN)
