VISAKHAPATNAM: The districts of Visakhapatnam and Kurnool have topped the charts in minor millets production, contributing to nearly 90% production in the state.
Explaining the spurt in minor millet cultivation, joint director, agriculture, A Mallikarjuna Rao said, “Minor millets are an ideal crop in up-land agricultural areas of the district. Much of the Narsipatnam revenue division and agency areas are completely dependent on rainwater.
This is among the reasons why farmers are taking to minor millet production as they are able to endure dry weather.”
Sources in the agriculture department said millets not only help improve groundwater levels but also reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers.
